I grew up in Pennsylvania playing the three major sports. I kept an eye on the elite programs, coaches, and players, too, which comes in handy when I write my historical sports books. The first book was Titles for our Town about small-town basketball dynasties during the golden age. My second book from Arcadia Publishing is about the great Cambria County Johnstown Invitational Basketball Tournament that ran every December from 1949-1994. Great players like Wilt Chamberlain, Wali Jones, Gene Banks, Reggie Lewis, Tyrone Muggsy Bogues, Tom McMillen, Rasheed Wallace and others competed here. Programs like DeMatha Catholic from Washington DC, Power Memorial from New York, St. Anthony's from both New Jersey and D.C., and Dunbar from Baltimore and D.C. played in the famous Flood City.
When small towns rose to prominence across Pennsylvania.
